Meteor Hints and Tips

  • Assembly: A school pep-rally held at the end of every nine-week grading period (for the student body only), where awards are given for excellence in academics, music, PE and art.

  • Background Check: All school volunteers must have a current PISD background check on file. No one is allowed past the front desk during school hours, with the exception of having lunch with your child, unless a background check has been completed. This includes: class parties, field trips and any volunteering you do at school. You must renew this every school year. It can take up to 2 weeks to process, so do it now to be sure you're ready when duty calls.

  • Book Fair Week: Scholastic books available for sale in the library to students, parents and staff during one week in the fall. A Family Night is held on the Thursday evening of this week in conjunction with ART Night. Book Fairs are PTA-funded, and go to support the PTA and all that it funds.

     

  • Box Tops: A PTA sponsored class contest to raise funds for the school. You earn cash for Mitchell by clipping Box Tops coupons from hundreds of participating products and turning them into the school. Box Tops are collected once per semester. http://boxtops4education.com

  • Carnival: A PTA fundraiser held in the beginning of April; open to the community with games, food and entertainment.

  • College Week: Held in January, the week focuses on encouraging children to create goals for both higher education and careers of interest.

  • Dads Club: A group of Mitchell dad’s that helps with morning drop-off and make themselves available for various volunteer needs throughout the year.

  • Class Dojo App: A convenient way for teachers and parents to privately message each other — without exchanging phone numbers; instantly share photos, videos and updates with parents as well.

  • End-of-Year Party: End-of-Year parties are organized by the Grade Level Coordinators and executed by Room Parents. All parties are limited to students, teachers, homeroom parents and grade level coordinators. They are usually held the day before the last day of school from 1:45 – 2:30.

  • Field Day: A PTA sponsored school-wide field day held the last week of school with games, relays, a snow-cone truck and music.

  • Field Trips: Each grade level has 1-2 field trip per year which varies by grade level. Sometimes parent chaperones are needed and other times not. Parent chaperones will need to provide their own transportation and have a current PISD background check on file.

  • Hygiene Drive: An annual community outreach drive in September we conduct to collect hygiene items for our 5th graders to take to camp and to those in need.

  • International Night: A PTA sponsored event held in the evening in February- featuring activities, food samples and entertainment from around the world.

  • Kindergarten Round-Up: The first opportunity incoming kinder families have to register their child for school in March.

  • Mitchell Food Drive: An annual community outreach drive we conduct to stock the local food pantries.

  • Online Auction: PTA sponsored online fundraiser held in October through biddingforgood.com.

  • Open House: Parents are invited to visit their child’s classroom to view special assignments and projects. This is a come and go event (not a teacher conference period).

  • Parent Liaison: A Mitchell staff member who works to help parents get the information and support they need to ensure their child’s academic and social success. A LIAISON is the contact person who initiates a close connection/relationship and maintains that communication/link between two parties in order to ensure concerted action and cooperation toward agreed upon goals on both sides.

  • PACE: Stands for Physical activity, Academic assistance, Character education, and Enrichment. It is

  • PISD Parent Portal: Plano ISD’s website to grant parent’s access to their child’s grades, attendance, to update annual registration information, enroll and pay for PASAR (after school care), and a link to pay for lunch. For more info, visit www.parentportal.pisd.edu/Login.aspx

  • Meet the Teacher: This is usually held the Friday before the first day of school. Parents and students are welcome to come and meet their new teachers and get acquainted with their classrooms.

  • Pay Pams: Online service that allows parents to pay for cafeteria accounts and monitor what their children are buying for lunch. https://paypams.com/

  • PIN: Also the same as the student ID number. Each student has a PIN which they punch in when they want to purchase lunch or check out library books. Parents must use this number to sign their child out of PASAR (after school care).

  • PTA Board Meetings: Typically held on the first Tuesday of the month at 8:00 am in the conference room. PTA Board members (both executive board and committee chairs) are all expected to attend.

  • PTA General Meetings: Typically held monthly on a Thursday evening at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria. All parents highly encouraged to attend. Please remind your child that school rules still apply during these meetings (no climbing on furniture, playing tag in the atrium, etc.).

  • PTA (Parent Teacher Association): An important part of Mitchell’s continued success! The PTA is responsible for and/or helps with most of Mitchell’s programs/events and funds many things at Mitchell including the Agendas, IPads in the library, tables in the cafeteria for parents and much more.

  • Red Ribbon Week: Red Ribbon Week is a national tribute to drug and alcohol awareness, and takes place in the fall. Peer mediators visit and students show support with silly outfits throughout the week.

  • Reflections: A National PTA art contest with mandatory participation for grades K-3 held in the fall. http://www.txpta.org/programs/reflections/

  • Report Cards: Report cards go home at the end of each nine week grading period via Tuesday Folders for grades 1-6. For grades 1 and 2, grades are given on a scale of 1 to 4 and for grades 3 and up, grades are given on a scale of 1-100. Kindergarten students receive one report card at the end of each semester.

  • Room Parents: An electronic sign-up will be available Aug 1st ; allowing parents to sign up to be a room parent. Room parents will be announced once class lists are available (after meet the teachers). Up to 2 parents sign up per classroom to assist the teacher throughout the school year, send out important information to their class and execute class parties.

  • Science Fair: A school organized event taking place in the fall with mandatory participation for grades 4-6 and encouraged participation for grades K-3.

  • Specials: Specials are Art, Music and PE classes.

  • STAAR Test: A state mandated achievement test for grades 3-6 taking place in the Spring. No visitors are allowed at the school during STAAR Testing.

  • School Supply Sale: School supply kits are sold by PTA online August 1st. They are delivered to the students’ classroom and sorted by the teachers. This is the teacher-preferred way of purchasing supplies to ensure uniformity.

  • Teacher Appreciation Week: A PTA sponsored week in May with a theme and daily treats and gestures from volunteers to show how much we appreciate our teachers.

  • Parent/Teacher Conferences: 15 minute conference with your child’s home room teacher at the school. Additional parent conferences can always be requested at any time by contacting your child’s teacher.

  • Thankful Party: Parties are organized by Grade Level Coordinators and executed by Room Parents. They are held in November from 1:45- 2:30. Volunteers must have a current PISD background check on file in order to attend.

  • Yellow Newsletter: PTA generated bi-weekly newsletter that has important and upcoming information.

  • Valentine’s Party: Valentine’s Parties are organized by Grade Level Coordinators and executed by Room Parents. They are held the Friday closest to Valentine’s Day from 1:45 – 2:30. Volunteers must have a current PISD background check on file in order to attend.

  • Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students): National Dad’s program managed by a PTA Chairperson where Dad’s sign up to spend one day helping at the school. That day is coordinated with the Watch D.O.G.S. Chair and the Assistant Principal. A Watch D.O.G.S shirt is available for purchase. All participants must have a current PISD background check on file.

  • Winter Party: Winter parties are organized and executed by Room Parents. They are held the last day of the fall semester from 1:45 – 2:30. Volunteers must have a current PISD background check on file in order to attend.

  • Write a Check Campaign: A simple and effective PTA fundraiser that allows for a number of our enriching student programs, family events, classroom supplies and teacher appreciation. Your contribution is 100% tax deductible and 100% goes to benefit our children. When you donate $50 or more, you will receive a FREE Mitchell Elementary Yard sign.
